The Minho River dividing Portugal and Spain shares its name with the surrounding region. Minho is the spiritual birthplace of Portugal, and Minho is known for charming stately homes and a unique culture similar to neighbouring Galicia. On the tour you will see:
Guimarães:
Castle of Guimarães – built in the 10th century in a Romanesque style, this castle saw the birth and baptism of the first King of Portugal.
Palace of the Dukes of Bragança – the mediaeval estates of the first Dukes of Bragança were once the official residence for the Presidency.
Guimarães historic centre – Guimarães, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001 and a European Capital of Culture in 2012, retains an intriguing mediaeval heritage.
On the way to your next destination you can admire the acres of vineyards used to produce Vinho Verde, Portugal’s most famous wine.
Braga:
Santuário do Bom Jesus – a monumental Baroque stairway takes visitors through beautiful gardens and fountains to the site’s church. Nature and spirituality truly come together here.
Cathedral of Braga – to the north of central Braga lies one of the most important buildings in all of Portugal. This church is the seat of the Primate Archbishop of Portugal and Spain.
